BASHA UHURU FREEDOM FESTIVAL
Johannesburg’s most anticipated creative festival, Constitution Hill’s Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival, will offer a jam-packed line-up of creative immersions and experiences for its 2024 edition from the 27th to the 29th of June 2024.
This year the event pays homage to 30 years of democracy and heritage with the theme “Celebrating 30 Years Creative freedom” The festival will highlight the role of young people and their participation in creative and social movements.
Basha Uhuru forms part of an ongoing ecosystem of creative spaces and communities – within this signature festival we celebrate artistic expression in all its forms.
It’s a youth movement synonymous with a creative, open-minded, and often non-conforming and unconventional community, placing the institution at the epicentre of urban culture inspired by music, art and urban culture.
The Basha Uhuru Festival was founded by Constitution Hill in 2012 to immortalise the memory of the youth who fought for their right to choose in the Soweto 1976 Uprising, affording youth of today the freedom to explore their creativity and freedom of expression.

Sounds of Freedom Music Festival
The music festival, featuring new talent and local mega stars, opens at 10:00. Enjoy a full day at the Curated Market with live music, performances, activations, food stalls, and bars.
Art Exhibition
Ms. Gaisang Sathekge, Chief Curator at the James Hall Museum of Transport, is returning to the Basha Uhuru festival. She will curate "The New Black: A Rainbow Deferred," an exhibition reimagining blackness and artistic agency within the evolving African identity.
Creative Conference
Featuring curated talks and workshops to enhance creative skills and foster solutions for creatives. Partnered with industry experts, it includes panels on health and wellness, and highlights on the healing power of creativity for activism and change.
Visions of freedom Film Festival
The Visions of Freedom Film Festival honors the 1976 youth uprising by showcasing student films. It highlights the perseverance of film students despite educational challenges and connects them with industry leaders for mentorship.
Curated Market
This year's Makers Market, featuring The Collab Space pop-up by Floyd Avenue and Dope Store, showcases handmade fashion, accessories, and home decor. Supporting local artisans and sustainable practices, it reflects South African creatives' journeys and communities.
