The Soundtrack of a Movement
Basha Uhuru is heating up Jozi’s winter with the Sounds of Freedom Music Festival — a full-day celebration of music, memory, movement and creative freedom.
In 2026, Basha Uhuru commemorates 50 Years of Youth Activism & Creative Freedom, honouring the journey from the youth voices of 1976 to the artists, audiences and culture-makers shaping South Africa today.
Set at Constitution Hill’s People’s Park, the festival brings generations together through sound — from iconic performers and dancefloor favourites to new-wave talent, emerging voices and the next generation of South African cultural energy.
Expect live music, DJ sets, food, fashion, public art, creative activations, the Curated Market, the Creative Youth Expo and a full festival atmosphere built for the culture.

One Stage. Fifty Years. A Thousand Voices.
Sounds of Freedom is more than a music festival. It is a living timeline of youth culture, resistance, self-expression and joy.
From the streets of 1976 to the stages of 2026, young people have used creativity to question, disrupt, heal and imagine new futures. This year, the festival carries that spirit forward through live performance, DJ sets, dancefloor moments and shared celebration.
From smooth afternoon grooves to late-night bangers, it is a sonic journey through South African brilliance — built for the culture, grounded in memory, and made for right now.
Basha Uhuru Sounds of Freedom Legacy Award
The Sounds of Freedom stage also honours the artists whose work has helped shape South African music culture across generations.
Previous Basha Uhuru Legacy Award honourees include Mandla Spikiri, Thebe, Alaska and Boom Shaka — artists and groups whose music has carried the sound of the streets, the dancefloor and youth culture into South Africa’s wider cultural memory.
In 2026, the legacy continues as Basha Uhuru celebrates the lasting impact of South African music, youth culture and creative freedom across generations.
1976 → 2026:
Fifty Years of Youth Voices
Basha Uhuru was born to honour the youth of 1976 and the creative freedom they made possible.
Fifty years later, the story continues through music, art, film, poetry, fashion, design, entrepreneurship and youth culture. Sounds of Freedom closes the festival by turning remembrance into rhythm, history into movement, and freedom into a shared experience.
This is not just a stage.
It is a timeline.
It is a tribute.
It is a celebration of how far youth voices can carry.
A Festival Built for the Culture
Sounds of Freedom is not just a gig. It is a full cultural experience.
Come for the performances. Stay for the people, the food, the fashion, the market, the activations, the moments between sets, and the feeling of being part of something bigger.
Across the day, audiences can expect live music, curated DJ sets, immersive activations, the Curated Market, food trucks, cocktail corners, public art, creative activations and spaces to connect, recharge and take it all in.
Whether you are here to dance, discover, reflect or simply feel the city come alive, this is your space to celebrate freedom loudly.
